Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Laminate
If you’re shopping for laminate flooring in Northern Nevada, you’ve likely seen products labeled as either “water resistant” or “waterproof.” While they sound similar, understanding the practical difference between the two can save you from costly repairs down the road. Here’s a clear breakdown on the difference between waterproof and water-resistant laminate so you can choose the right option for your home.
The Core Difference
Traditional laminate consists of a wood byproduct core (typically high-density fiberboard) topped with an image layer and a protective wear layer. Because wood fiber naturally absorbs water, laminate was always susceptible to moisture damage—until now.
How Water-Resistant Laminate Works
Water-resistant laminate still features a wood byproduct core, but each plank is treated to repel surface-level moisture for a limited amount of time. However, water resistant does not mean waterproof. If a spill sits long enough, moisture will eventually seep into the core, causing it to swell, warp, or cup. Most laminate manufacturers recommend cleaning spills within 24 to 72 hours.
How Waterproof Laminate Works
Waterproof laminate features an entirely different core engineered with enhanced materials and advanced locking joint technology. With waterproof laminate, water cannot penetrate from the surface to the core, meaning topical spills (such as pet accidents or tracked-in snow) will not damage your flooring, even if they’re left to sit for an extended period of time. It’s important to note, however, that even waterproof laminate isn’t meant to withstand subfloor leaks or moisture issues from below.

Which Type of Laminate Should You Choose?
If you’re installing in a bedroom, guest room, dining room, home office, formal living area, or hallway, water-resistant laminate should perform well while offering incredible scratch resistance and affordability. If you’re installing in a kitchen, bathroom, mudroom, or laundry room, you may want to opt for waterproof laminate.
